City officials, Indy DPW celebrate completion of newly reconstructed Morris Street corridor
INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) celebrated the completion of the West Morris Street Revitalization project. This milestone marks the end of a significant infrastructure upgrade to improve safety and connectivity along the Morris Street corridor from the Eagle Creek bridge to Harding Street.
The West Morris Street Revitalization is part of the city’s Complete Streets initiative, which focuses on ensuring that streets are designed to allow safe access for all users, regardless of age, ability, or mode of transportation. The new, protected multi-use pathway is a key element of the project, promoting healthy, sustainable transportation options.
Mayor Joe Hogsett praised the project, saying, "The West Morris Street Revitalization Project represents a commitment to safer, more connected neighborhoods. By creating a more accessible and multi-modal corridor, we are investing in the future of Indianapolis and improving the quality of life for our residents."
The $10 million project, which began in 2022, includes a variety of enhancements:
-
3,000+ feet of new sidewalks equipped with ADA-compliant ramps
-
Middle left-turn lane
-
Divided medians
-
Resurfaced roadways
-
Almost 4,500 feet of new storm sewer
-
Parking bump-outs
-
A multi-use pathway that is almost 4,000 feet long
-
Upgraded traffic signals
The project also incorporates aesthetic and environmental improvements, such as tree plantings along the corridor.
Councilor Kristin Jones emphasized the significance of the improvements: "This project has been a long time coming, and I’m thrilled to see it come to fruition. West Morris Street will now be a model for how we can reimagine our infrastructure to serve all members of our community, from those walking and biking to those driving and using public transportation."
Indy DPW Director, Brandon Herget, shared his excitement about the completion: "This revitalization is a testament to what we can achieve through collaboration between the city, stakeholders, and the community. We’ve transformed this corridor into a safer, more sustainable space that meets the needs of all users."
The revitalization is not only an investment in infrastructure but also in the residents who rely on Morris Street for daily travel. Lisa Laflin, Executive Director of West Indianapolis Development Corp (WIDC) said, "As a resident and regular user of Morris Street, I am excited to see the positive impact these changes will have. This project improves safety and accessibility for everyone and ensures that our community continues to thrive."
