Indy DPW crews prepared for rain from remnants of Hurricane Beryl

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) will have additional crews ready to respond to the possible severe weather in the forecast.


According to National Weather Service Indianapolis (NWS Indianapolis), remnants from Hurricane Beryl could impact Indiana late Tuesday through early Friday. NWS Indianapolis says to expect heavy rain and an isolated severe weather risk.


“With heavy rain in the forecast, we’ll be bringing in additional crews to help keep Indianapolis running as smoothly as possible,” said Indy DPW Director Brandon Herget. “We’re urging residents to stay on top of the forecast and make travel choices accordingly.”


As a property owner, you are responsible for drainage issues on your property. You can help by making sure drainage ditches, driveway pipes, and easements are in working order and clear of anything that would obstruct water flow before the arrival of heavy rain.


As Citizens Energy Group (CEG) maintains the stormwater piping and roadside ditches for the city to facilitate safe and efficient control of stormwater, the City of Indianapolis utilizes the CEG call center to triage all stormwater drainage concerns from residents. When heavy rains cause flooding and drainage issues in city streets and sidewalks, notify CEG at (317) 924-3311. CEG will triage the concern and forward any appropriate issues to DPW dispatch for resolution.


Indy DPW also wants to remind the public to never travel through flood waters. Turn around, don’t drown. Even a few inches of flood water can move a vehicle or sweep someone off their feet.


Mayor Hogsett’s five-year, $1.2 billion capital infrastructure plan is investing $220 million in stormwater improvements, with $177 million allocated to drainage work and $26 million to culverts. Indy DPW’s budget for stormwater-related projects has grown from $43 million in 2017 to $79 million in 2024, allowing the department to address more stormwater issues across the city.
